Eating seasonally – the benefits.
Eating seasonally is a great way to get more nutrients into your diet. many years ago the rise of the supermarket saw the fall of the nutrient value of fruits and vegetables! It also saw many people get lazier and more reliant on convenience – hence the huge obesity epidemic we are facing as a nation.
Although the problem is very complex, there are small things we can do to lead healthier lifestyles. One of them being to increase the nutrient levels in our foods.
An easy way to do that is by eating in season. Not all fruits and vegetables are designed to grow all year round in every weather condition and therefore they are pumped with different chemicals and picked well before they are fully ripened in order to get on to the shelves in time. The later stages of ripening are when the plants produce most of its essential nutrients – which as humans we need for basic functions!
By buying from local organic farmers, you may not find the most beautiful or perfect looking vegetables – but they will be better for you. And you’ll have more chance of finding only whats in season for that specific time of the year.
